
Vice President and Chief Risk Officer
Wayne Marchant joined Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) in 1994 as director of corporate risk management and insurance. He developed MUMC’s nationally recognized risk management, loss prevention, and claims administration programs. He is a founding director and officer of Memorial Professional Assurance Company, MUMC’s wholly owned captive insurance company that has saved millions of dollars in costs by providing claims control and economic stability in medical professional and general liability insurance coverage for both the employed physicians and the hospital.
Before joining MUMC, Marchant served as director of risk management for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Hospitals and later for the Moses Cone Health System. Prior to that, he served as national director of corporate risk management and claims administration for Gencon Risk Management Services in Washington, D.C., managing a healthcare captive insurance company for more than 70 hospitals.
Marchant holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and industrial psychology from the University of Tennessee. He is a graduate of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corp and is a commissioned officer in the Army Adjutant General Corp. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Institute of Administration’s Administrative and Personnel Officer Schools and the Advanced Medical Corpsman School. Marchant has completed numerous insurance, risk management, and claims schools and is a qualified broker, adjustor, risk manager, and mediator. He has held leadership roles in several state risk management associations and is president of the Georgia Society of Healthcare Risk Management. He is lifetime member and fellow of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management of the American Hospital Association.
