
Vice President, Quality and Patient Safety
Marty Scott, M.D., MBA, oversees patient safety and quality initiatives
at Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC), a role he assumed
in 2007. He was previously director of patient safety and quality
at the George and Marie Backus Children’s Hospital and the
Women’s Health Institute at MUMC. Dr. Scott led initiatives
that reduced patient identification errors, reduced medication errors,
and improved communication processes. He also oversaw error-prevention
training for Team Members. When he first joined MUMC in 2003, Dr.
Scott was vice chairman of finance at Backus Children’s Hospital.
Before coming to Savannah, Dr. Scott was president and managing
partner of Carolina Children’s Critical Care in Charlotte.
He also spent two years as medical director of Coventry Healthcare
of the Carolinas. In 1996, Dr. Scott created and co-owned HeathAnswers,
Inc., a 24-hour nurse telephone advice and after-hours primary care
triage company. The company was eventually sold to Carolinas Healthcare
System and is still in use today.
Dr. Scott completed his undergraduate work at David Lipscomb College
in Nashville, and earned his medical degree at the University of
Louisville in Kentucky. He received an MBA from the University of
North Carolina in Charlotte. Dr. Scott served as a pediatric resident
at the University of Louisville Affiliated Hospitals and Kosair
Children’s Hospital. He was then selected for fellowship training
in pediatric critical care at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial
Hospital. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical
care. Dr. Scott is a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics
at Mercer University School of Medicine. He is a certified patient
safety officer and holds Six Sigma Black Belt certification for
quality control expertise.
