Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or chemical irritants. It is a serious condition in which the air sacs fill with fluid, making it hard to breathe. Without proper treatment, pneumonia can be deadly. Learn more about pneumonia.

There are standards of care that improve a person’s chance of surviving pneumonia and having a good quality of life afterward. Those standards are listed in the first column of the table below. Click on each term to learn what it means. The next columns show how well Memorial University Medical Center met those standards of care.

Memorial Health Vs. National Average

The graphs below show how Memorial Health compares to other hospitals nationwide. The national average is pulled from all hospitals submitting data to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) during a specific time frame. The numbers below represent 2010 data. Click on the blue tabs to see the average for each category. A higher number is better.

  • Blood Culture
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Influenza Vaccination
  • Pneumococcal Vaccination
  • Antibiotic Within 6 Hours
  • App. Antibiotic for Non-ICU

Blood Culture

Quality Measure Percentage of pneumonia patients at Memorial University Medical Center who had a blood sample studied before receiving any medication.
Why is this important? By analyzing the blood, doctors can see what type of pneumonia is present and which type of antibiotic will treat it.

Smoking Cessation

Quality Measure Percentage of pneumonia patients who were given information to help them stop smoking before being discharged from Memorial University Medical Center.
Why is this important? Smoking can make pneumonia more severe.

Influenza Vaccination

Quality Measure Percentage of pneumonia patients that received a shot, if needed, to protect them from influenza (flu). Flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease.
Why is this important? Many people who have a high risk of getting pneumonia are also at risk for getting flu. The vaccine can protect them.

Pneumococcal Vaccination

Quality Measure Percentage of pneumonia patients who received a pneumonia vaccine (if needed) before being discharged from Memorial University Medical Center.
Why is this important? The vaccine may prevent bacterial pneumonia or make the disease less severe.

Antibiotic Within 6 Hours

Quality Measure Percentage of pneumonia patients who received proper antibiotic treatment within six hours of arriving at Memorial University Medical Center.
Why is this important? Receiving an antibiotic within six hours can cure bacterial pneumonia and reduce the risk of complications from the disease.

Appropriate Antibiotic for Non-ICU Patients

Quality Measure Percentage of non-critical patients who received appropriate antibiotics for pneumonia at Memorial University Medical Center.
Why is this important? Specific antibiotics are used to treat or prevent particular types of pneumonia. Healthcare workers must determine which antibiotics are most appropriate for each patient.
