Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or chemical irritants. It is a serious condition in which the air sacs fill with fluid, making it hard to breathe. Without proper treatment, pneumonia can be deadly. Learn more about pneumonia.
There are standards of care that improve a person’s chance of surviving pneumonia and having a good quality of life afterward. Those standards are listed in the first column of the table below.
