Research Focus
Understanding how cigarette smoke-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response contributes to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer at the cellular and molecular level.
Biography
Anna Blumental-Perry, Ph.D., began her academic career at the Medical School of Riga in Latvia. She then earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. Blumental-Perry completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, studying cell biology and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) function. She continued at the University of Pittsburgh as a junior faculty member under the mentorship of Steven Shapiro, M.D., who is credited with pioneering mouse models to understand the effects of cigarette smoke exposure and cigarette-related diseases. Blumental-Perry applied her expertise to the study of ER function as a result of cigarette smoke exposure. In May 2009, Blumental-Perry joined the Department of Surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. In 2010, she came to the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
Blumental-Perry is well published and has received research grants from the American Thoracic Society and the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute. Her research could potentially change the way we treat COPD and lung cancer.
