Research Focus
The roles of polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid metabolism in prostate, bladder, and breast cancer. In particular, Kelavkar's lab focuses on an enzyme called 15-lipoxygenase-1 and the role of diet in cancer formation and progression. Other studies in his lab include a clinical trial on the effects of fish oil supplements following radical prostatectomy; inflammation and breast and bladder cancer; and epigenetics and molecular profiling to identify slow-growing versus aggressive prostate and breast cancer.
Biography
Uddhav P. Kelavkar, Ph.D., leads our urology research program with particular emphasis on prostate and bladder cancer research. Kelavkar received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in microbiology from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. He then completed postdoctoral training at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky, Clark Atlanta University in Georgia, and the Michigan Genome Center. Before coming to Savannah, Kelavkar was assistant professor at Emory University in Atlanta and later assistant professor of hematology/oncology in the prostate and urologic cancer center at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed research journals and written two book chapters. He has been invited to lecture at several national and international conferences. Kelavkar’s research has been funded by the American Cancer Society, the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program, and the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). He also serves on numerous study sections including NIH and the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Programs.
