The
information in this section pertains only to ovarian cancer treatment
at the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial
University Medical Center and is based on 2007 data.
Ovarian cancer accounts for only 30 percent of all gynecologic cancers, but is responsible for a majority of gynecologic cancer deaths. The disease occurs primarily in post-menopausal women. The incidence of ovarian cancer varies by race, with the age-adjusted rate for Caucasian women higher than that for African-American women. When diagnosed at an early stage, five-year survival can be as high as 90 percent. However, greater than 75 percent of cases are diagnosed in advanced stages.
