The
Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute and the George and Marie Backus
Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center work together to offer the region’s only pediatric
and adolescent hematology/oncology program.
Our children's cancer program is centered around a multidisciplinary treatment approach. That means world-class physicians, certified pediatric oncology
nurses, case managers, trained child life specialists, and others all work together to determine the best treatment for the child and his or her family. In addition to our extensive inpatient services, our outpatient facility offers blood and blood product transfusions, chemotherapy, and limited moderate sedation for procedures such as bone marrow aspiration/biopsy and lumbar punctures.
Backus Children's Hospital is affiliated with the Children's
Oncology Group (COG). Member institutions are located in almost every
state and province in North America, at more than 235 prestigious
medical centers. Research from COG members has contributed to major
treatment advances and increasing cure rates for childhood cancer.
As a member of COG, we are able to give children access to the highest
standards of care, no matter where they live.
Pediatric and adolescent hematology/oncology patients are
seen by physician referral only. Physicians wishing to make a referral
