Water is a unique and effective therapeutic tool. It provides
a weightless environment that enables children to move
more freely than they can on land. Warm water also helps
to relax tight muscles and improve flexibility, while the
resistance helps strengthen all of the muscles in the body.
The pressure of the water may also improve respiration,
cardiovascular function, and body awareness.
The Aquatics Program at Backus Children's Hospital is staffed
by an occupational therapist, physical therapist, and speech/language
pathologist. These therapists work with the child's regular
therapist to design a safe and fun-filled aquatic therapy plan
that will promote health, self-confidence, and improved function.
Aquatic therapy is especially beneficial to children with the
following conditions:
-
Neurological Impairments
- Congenital Abnormalities
- Spina Bifida
- Cerebral Palsy
- Down Syndrome
- Sensory Impairments
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Orthopedic Impairments
- Muscular Dystrophy
