Backus Children's Hospital offers an assistive technology program for children
who have difficulty activating devices or communicating. The program is especially beneficial to children with cerebral palsy, communication impairment, head injuries, autism, or spinal cord injuries. The
assistive technology program is designed to increase independence, improve quality
of life, and evaluate and train children and their families in the following
areas:
- Augmentative communication -- creating different ways to communicate, including
positioning pictures or using a talking computer
- Environmental controls -- switches that assist in play and can activate
lights, televisions, and telephones
- Special computers -- equipped with switch devices for easy use, special
keyboards, and assistive software
A team of occupational, physical, and speech/language pathologists evaluates
children and recommends the most appropriate assistive technology.
