support groups Backus Children's HospitalChild life specialists offer support services to hematology and oncology families during clinic visits, outpatient procedures, and treatments. They work closely with the child's care team to help patients and families cope and adjust to their illness. Child life services are also available during sedation, radiologic tests or treatment, and other outpatient procedures.

Support Groups
Child life specialists assist with support groups for hematology/oncology patients and their families. The support groups provide education and give families a chance to meet others who are experiencing the same issues. We offer the following support groups.

PRIDE (Presenting Realistic Ideas to Develop Empowerment)
This support group addresses the educational and emotional needs of parents who have children with bleeding disorders. The goal is to give parents tools and support to cope with the challenges of raising a child with a bleeding disorder. Children and siblings also find friendship and support at the meetings through conversation and play. Monthly activities may include educational sessions selected by parents, scrap-booking, or fun family outings. The group meets once a month for a scheduled activity and a free dinner. Free child care is also provided.

To learn more about PRIDE, call 912-350-7285.

SET (Support and Education for Transition) Focus and Ready SET
The SET Focus group is for children ages 12 to 17 who have sickle cell disease. The group helps adolescents become self-sufficient in their medical care. This is accomplished through support and ongoing education about their disease. While the children are meeting, their parents also learn about sickle cell disease and how to help their children take responsibility for disease management.

The Ready SET group is for children ages 7 to 11 years old who have sickle cell disease. The group is similar to SET Focus, except that the information is geared toward a younger audience.

Both groups meet once a month for a scheduled activity and a free dinner.

To learn more about SET Focus and Ready SET, call 912-350-3396.
