Within Backus Children’s Hospital, there are inpatient units that specialize in different types of care.
General Pediatric Unit
This 41-bed unit provides care to children with medical conditions
that require a hospital stay. Children undergoing surgery
or hematology/oncology treatment also stay on this unit. Children
are admitted to the inpatient unit either through the pediatric
emergency department or a referring physician's office. Care is provided by a team of nurses, physicians, and child-life specialists who are specially trained to meet the needs of children.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Pediatric specialists care for critically ill or injured children
and adolescents in this 10-bed unit. The critical care team
includes board-certified intensivists, resident physicians,
nurses, respiratory therapists, case workers, and pharmacists.
They work together to give children the best possible care.
