 To
have your child evaluated by our occupational, physical, or
speech/language therapists, we first need a referral from
a primary care physician (a pediatrician or family practitioner)
and a referral number from the insurance company. Before
the evaluation, a scheduling therapist will call you to gather
information about your child. The evaluation itself will include
an interview with you, an observation session with your child,
and possible testing. Our therapists will then give you information
and further recommendations based on the evaluation.
Occupational therapists evaluate self-care, fine motor skills,
eye-hand coordination, functional visual skills, oral-motor
and feeding skills, attention and behavior, responses to various
sensory input, musculoskeletal and neuromotor conditions, psychological
abilities, and cognitive abilities. Your child's degree of
function in school, play, and self-care will be examined.
Physical therapists evaluate physical characteristics, functional
mobility, gross motor development, neuromotor control, range
of motion, strength, respiration, adaptive equipment, and bracing.
Your child's manner and method of movement, patterns of development,
and developmental level will be observed.
Speech/language pathologists evaluate receptive and expressive language skills,
articulation, voice, speech fluency, respiration, oral-motor, and feeding skills.
Your child's method of communication, degree of understanding, ability to follow
directions, ability to ask and answer questions, ability to name objects or pictures,
ability to carry on a conversation, and developmental level of feeding and swallowing
will be observed.
