Hematology/Oncology
Backus
Children's Hospital works with The Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer
Institute at Memorial Health University Medical Center to provide
the region's only pediatric and adolescent hematology/oncology program.
The program has been serving patients since 1993.
Our hematology/oncology program is centered around a multidisciplinary
approach to the management of cancer and blood disorders in
people under the age of 18. We provide blood and blood product
transfusions, chemotherapy, and limited moderate sedation for
procedures such as bone marrow aspiration/biopsy and lumbar
punctures.
The pediatric oncology team includes certified pediatric oncology
nurses, case managers, trained child life specialists, and board-certified
pediatric hematology/oncology physicians, Trib Vats, M.D., Cynthia
Gonzales, M.D., and Lawrence Frankel, M.D.
Backus Children's Hospital is affiliated with the Children's
Oncology Group (COG). Member institutions are located in almost
every state and province in North America, at more than 235
prestigious medical centers. Research from COG members has
contributed to major treatment advances and increasing cure
rates for childhood cancer. As a member of COG, we are able
to give children access to the highest standards of care. |
