Inpatient Units
Within Backus Children’s Hospital, there are several
inpatient units that specialize in different types of care.
Pediatric Unit
This 41-bed unit provides care to children with medical conditions
that require a hospital stay. Children undergoing surgery
or hematology/oncology treatment also stay on this unit. Children
are admitted to the inpatient unit either through the pediatric
emergency department or a referring physician's office. The
pediatric unit is staffed with nurses, physicians, and child-life
therapists who are specially trained to meet the needs of children.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Our 44-bed NICU cares for premature newborns and infants in
need of special medical or surgical attention. An array of
specialists cares for the infants around the clock. Within
the NICU, there are three specialized sections:
• A neonatal intensive care nursery that treats very sick infants
and new admissions
• A nursery for growing babies who do not require intensive care
• A unit for infants who are about to be discharged
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Pediatric specialists care for critically ill or injured children
and adolescents in this 10-bed unit. The critical care team
includes board-certified intensivists, resident physicians,
nurses, respiratory therapists, case workers, and pharmacists.
They work together to give children the best possible care.
Ronald McDonald House

Savannah’s Ronald McDonald House serves as a home away from home each year for 250 families of injured or sick children receiving treatment at Backus Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center. The 10-bedroom house is located directly across the street from Memorial’s main entrance.
