Therapy Backus Children's Hospital's occupational therapy services are provided by licensed, certified, occupational therapists experienced in the treatment of children and adolescents. Pediatric occupational therapists use purposeful activities to increase your child's level of independence in daily living skills. We specifically address the areas of self-care, school, and play. Occupational therapy treats the whole child and addresses physical, cognitive, psychological, social, and emotional issues. Occupational therapy is especially beneficial to children with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, sensory integration dysfunction/sensory regulation disorder, sensory registration/processing deficits, developmental delays, persuasive developmental disorder/autism, head injuries, spinal cord injuries, feeding and swallowing disorders, Erb's palsy, spina bifida, cleft palate, Down syndrome, handwriting disorder, and fine motor disorder. Our services include comprehensive evaluation and treatment in the following areas: • Fine motor skills • Upper extremity joint range of motion and strength • Self-care skills such as feeding, hygiene, dressing, bathing, toilet habits, and safety in daily activities • Sensory integration • Visual-motor skills • Visual-perceptual skills • Posture, balance, and mobility • Feeding, swallowing, and oral motor skills • Handwriting • Cognition • Adaptive equipment needs • Splinting • Endurance • Play skills In addition to the therapy they receive at Backus Children's Hospital, children may also be recommended for a home program, group therapy, and/or special equipment or assistive technology. |
