Welcome
It's
estimated that 97 million Americans are overweight or obese -- more
than one-third of the adult population. Up to 10 million of these
people are morbidly obese, meaning their excess weight puts them
at risk for other serious health conditions and diseases such as
diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. Morbid obesity can result
in disability or death. Obesity in any form leads to a diminished
quality of life. To determine if you are obese or morbidly obese,
use the body mass index calculator below.
Bariatric surgery can help morbidly obese
patients lose much of their excess body weight. The adjustable gastric
band and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedures have risks you need
to understand in detail. Both procedures require patients to follow
the specific postoperative program. However, for many people, they
result in dramatic weight loss, a physical and psychological transformation,
and a new lease on life.

Memorial Health Bariatrics offers the region's only comprehensive
multidisciplinary bariatric surgery program. We have been designated
a bariatric surgery Center
of Excellence by the Surgical Rview Corporation and the
American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This means
we meet the rigorous standards set forth by this respected organization.
In addition, BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia named us a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery in 2008 and 2009.
Our patients receive extensive education and
on-going psychological support before and after surgery. Our surgeons,
John
Angstadt, M.D., and Oliver
Whipple, M.D., perform adjustable
gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-Y
gastric bypass in the area's most technologically advanced surgical
suites.
Patients who undergo laparoscopic adjustable bands stay at Memorial
University Medical Center (MUMC) overnight. Patients who undergo
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass stay three to four days. During that time,
a team of experienced nurses will work with you to ensure you receive
the best possible care.
