  • The Memorial Metabolic Institute provides support and education for people diagnosed with diabetes. Our certified diabetes educators help you manage your disease by providing:

    • Answers to your questions
    • Assistance in putting together a healthy eating plan
    • Suggestions for activities to increase physical activity
    • Resources to help you manage your diabetes

    Please ask your primary care physician to refer you to the Memorial Metabolic Institute. Our number is 912-350-5800.     Facts About Diabetes

    Diabetes is a serious, chronic disease that affects about 23.6 million adults and children in the United States. Diabetes can affect the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, blood vessels, gums, and feet. It can even cause death. The warning signs of type I diabetes are:

    • Frequent urination
    • Unusual thirst
    • Extreme hunger
    • Unusual weight loss
    • Extreme fatigue and irritability

    The warning signs of type 2 diabetes are:

    • Any of the type 1 symptoms
    • Frequent infections
    • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
    • Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
    • Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
    • Many people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms

    Early detection, education, and treatment can save your life.

     Sandra Brassard, R.D., CDE

    Content:

    Brassard, SandraBrassard is a registered dietitian and certified diabetic educator. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. She has been part of the Memorial team since 1991 and has worked as a dietitian since 1996. She began offering diabetes education in 2009.

     Glenda R. Jacobs, R.N., CDE

    Content:

    Jacobs, GlendaJacobs has been a Team Member at Memorial University Medical Center since 1972. She has worked as a certified diabetes educator for 27 years. She is a member of the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Jacobs is also a member of the Georgia Hospital Association and serves on a special interest group that works to ensure better diabetes care throughout the state.

     Cathy Shriver, MHS, MSN, R.N., CDE

    Content:

    Shriver, CathyShriver joined the Memorial team as a diabetes educator in 2003. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Health Sciences degrees at Armstrong Atlantic State University and her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Georgia Southern University. She was an assistant professor at Georgia Southern for more than 10 years before coming to Memorial.

     Ingrid Stier, BSN, R.N.

    Content:

    Stier, IngridStier earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1998 from the University of Oklahoma. That same year she came to work at Memorial University Medical Center. She earned her certification as a diabetes educator in 2005. Stier is currently pursuing a master’s degree as a family nurse practitioner at Georgia Southern University.
