How to Donate Blood
Donating blood is an easy way to make a difference in the lives of others. Donating whole blood takes about an hour from start to finish. The actual blood collection process may only take about 15 minutes. Automated donation/apheresis takes about two hours from start to finish. You can enjoy television, movies, and free wireless Internet access while you wait. Here’s what happens when you donate:
- You complete a questionnaire that asks basic health and lifestyle questions.
- A healthcare provider checks your vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature.
- You relax in a chair while an expert technician collects blood from your arm. You’ll feel a slight stick when a sterile needle is inserted in your arm. The collection process is clean, safe, and painless.
- When the collection is over, you enjoy cookies and juice and relax for a few minutes. When you feel ready, you can leave.
- You can return to donate whole blood every eight weeks, platelets and plasma every four weeks, or platelets every two weeks.
