Common Health Problems Associated With Travel in Developing Countries

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the following are some of the common health problems associated with travel to developing countries:

  • traveler's diarrhea (by far the most common risk - affecting 30 percent to 70 percent of international travelers based on the destination)
  • enterotoxic E. coli diarrhea
  • malaria
  • acute febrile respiratory tract infections
  • hepatitis (A , B, E)
  • gonorrhea
  • animal bites with rabies risk
  • typhoid and paratyphoid fever
  • HIV infection
  • Legionella infection
  • cholera
  • meningococcal disease
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Dengue Fever
  • Prion Diseases
  • yellow fever
  • tuberculosis
  • severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
  • poliomyelitis
