Memorial University Medical Center is excited about internal medicine
education. Our affiliation with Mercer University School of Medicine
is very rewarding as students from Mercer's main campus in Macon
complete their training at our Savannah campus. We constantly strive
to strengthen the overall educational experience at our facility and
all of the residents that participate in our program are certain to
benefit.
In recent years, Memorial University Medical Center has experienced
tremendous growth. We have a state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Institute
that provides inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation. The
Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial University
Medical Center provides the most advanced cancer care in the region.
Our Heart & Vascular Institute includes 54 ICU beds and six
digital angiographic suites, three for cardiology, two for vascular, and
one for neurovascular treatments. And, the William and Iffath Hoskins Center
for Biomedical Research is a multi-million dollar facility that houses
leading-edge cancer research and education facilities for our residents.
In 2008, Mercer University School of Medicine opened its Savannah
Campus. This has been an overwhelming success. The school started
with 30 first-year medical students and will expand to 60 students per year within the next three to five years. Our internal medicine
faculty is actively involved with the problem-based learning
educational format and this has already contributed to the energy,
innovative nature, and quality of our resident education
initiatives. We expect big things from our relationship with Mercer.
We had two recent and important developments in our residency.
We added one intern night float position in 2009 and plan to add
another in 2010. Also, we will begin our version of "resident school,"
an active team-based learning approach toward internal
medicine. We were able to achieve this by working with other
educators around the country and being open to change in our efforts
to provide residents with the best education possible.
During the past two years, we have significantly expanded our internal
medicine faculty complement. In fact, we basically doubled the number
of core faculty members. This has resulted in increased one-on-one
faculty/resident interaction. Residents are certainly able to
independently manage clinical problems, but faculty physicians are always
immediately available.
Strengths of our program include:
- A friendly, motivating, educational environment
- Strong core clinical faculty dedicated to the resident experience
- Excellent subspecialty rotations
- Comprehensive educational curriculum including our new team-based learning initiative
- Outstanding outpatient experience in patient-friendly facility
- High board pass rate history
- Direct access to the faculty at Mercer University School of Medicine
- Location in beautiful, historic, and culturally diverse coastal city
- Research opportunities in which residents can present locally and
nationally
- A good recent track record for fellowship placement
- Hospitalist program tightly aligned with our department
Training at Memorial University Medical Center gives you the knowledge
base and clinical skills needed to provide excellent patient care and
begin a strong career in internal medicine. Residents that graduate
from our program are strong candidates for positions in outpatient practice, hospitalist positions, and traditional primary care. Many also decide to further their education through subspecialty training.
