The
Pediatric Residency Program at Memorial University Medical
Center is a three-year program that emphasizes training
the generalist pediatrician. The George and Marie Backus
Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center
offers critical care, neonatology, child abuse and neglect
treatment, adolescent medicine, hematology/oncology, surgery, cardiology,
infectious disease, neurology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and
gastroenterology. Also available are community specialists in general
behavioral pediatrics, child psychiatry, and immunology/allergy.
Private attending pediatricians, surgical specialists, and visiting
professors from affiliated institutions also take an active teaching
role.
Ambulatory pediatrics features child health and general pediatric
clinics. Each house officer has a weekly continuity clinic and oversees
special problems as the need arises. House officers participate
in all aspects of patient care and are given complete guidance and
increasing patient responsibility. Regularly scheduled conferences
enhance both the academic and the practical aspects of pediatric
education. Full library services and a research coordinator are
also available for residents.
