Steven T. Brower, MD, FACS Welcome to the Department of Surgery at Mercer University School of Medicine – Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah. We appreciate your interest in our training program. Our surgery residency program gives bright, highly motivated individuals the opportunity to acquire the most advanced technical skills and surgical knowledge necessary to become a future surgical leader in this country. Graduates from our program have gone on to extraordinary clinical fellowships and some have chosen to enter clinical practice. Our faculty members are recognized experts in their fields of specialization. Our program is fully accredited by the ACGME residency review committee with 15 categorical positions in the five-year program. We are currently looking to expand our residency to four categorical chief residents and will be site visited in this academic year.

Our program offers exceptional opportunities for basic translational and clinical surgical research in addition to clinical experience in acute and outpatient settings. We recently opened the William and Iffath Hoskins Center for Biomedical Research, an 80,000 square foot research and education facility. The Hoskins Center is the site of basic research in molecular genetics and translational biology. Residents can experience electives in basic science research. Our training program provides an opportunity to integrate clinical training in surgery with experience in basic research in preparation for a career in academic surgery.

In concordance with the ACGME’s core competencies, our curriculum reflects the best aspects of practice-based learning and improvement. Our teaching involves a significant degree of mentoring and preceptorship, allowing residents to work directly with a single faculty member. We urge you to strongly consider this unique mentorship environment and the degree to which our faculty can serve as a wonderful resource for career direction.

At the completion of our residency training program, house officers gain an in-depth experience in general surgery, trauma, surgical critical care, surgical oncology, endocrine surgery, vascular surgery, transplantation, MIS, and pediatric surgery. Chief residents are exposed to the highest acuity surgery that a tertiary care, university-based medical center can achieve. More than 1,000 operations are usually performed by each resident. In addition, our curriculum allows for both a basic science bench research elective and a clinical research elective. Our residents are expected to publish a peer reviewed article before graduation and all of our residents present at regional and national meetings.

Thank you for your interest in our world-class surgical residency program. We are committed to providing a supportive learning environment with great attention to diversity and a learner-centered, evidence-based educational program.

Before joining Memorial University Medical Center, I was an endowed professor of surgical oncology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. I believe that our program provides the absolute best blend of a tertiary care university-based program with a wonderful supportive environment, great teachers, and a beautiful place to live. I hope that you will give us a good look as you consider your future in surgery.

Sincerely,
Steven T. Brower, M.D., FACS
