The Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center is the only facility in the region with a Level III neonatal intensive care nursery (NICN). The Level III designation means that we provide the most advanced neonatal services, have neonatal specialists available around the clock, and are equipped to treat the most critically ill babies.
Our 44-bed NICN cares for premature newborns and infants in need of special medical or surgical attention. Within the NICN, there are three specialized sections:
- A neonatal intensive care nursery that treats very sick infants and new admissions
- A nursery for growing babies who do not require intensive care
- A unit for infants who are almost ready to be sent home
Our NICN cares for newborns and infants from a 24-county region. Memorial has a specially trained emergency transport team and an ambulance outfitted with special newborn equipment to transport babies to our facility.
Should your baby require care in our NICN, we will work closely with you to teach you about your baby’s condition and special needs. We want parents to be actively involved in the care of their newborns. Depending on your baby’s condition, we will encourage you to hold, feed, rock, and cuddle your newborn as much as possible throughout the NICN stay.
