Carotid Artery Surgery

The carotid arteries are blood vessels in the neck that provide blood to the brain. Over the years, these arteries can become clogged with a fatty substance called plaque. High blood pressure, smoking, a fatty diet, and diabetes can increase the build up of plaque. If the plaque blocks the flow of blood to the brain, you can experience a stroke.

Carotid artery disease can be treated with a surgical procedure called a carotid endarterectomy. This procedure removes the plaque and restores normal blood flow to the brain.
