Memorial University Medical Center has an award-winning stroke program. After initial emergency treatment to stop the stroke, people may need physical, occupational, and/or speech and language therapy. Our inpatient stroke recovery program provides at least three hours of intensive therapy every day. People admitted to the program must have a physician's referral and be willing and able to actively participate.

The Stroke Rehabilitation Process
An individual stroke recovery program might include the following
services:
- Therapies for improving strength, endurance,
mobility, ambulation, and activities of daily living
- Perceptual evaluation and training, memory improvement, and
problem solving
- Recreational therapy
- Bowel and bladder therapy
- Strengthening and conditioning exercises in our pool
- Overcoming or compensating for speech and language difficulties
- Barium swallow studies and X-rays as needed
- Treatment of swallowing disorders
- Psychological counseling to help in understanding and adjusting
to physical and emotional changes
- Outings to practice community living skills
- Family conferences, involvement, and counseling
- Referral to vocational rehabilitation services
- Referral to our driving evaluation and retraining program
- Home assessments to recommend adaptive equipment and placement
of ramps and railings
- Home exercise program
- Discharge planning
Outpatient Stroke Rehabilitation
Our outpatient program
provides an opportunity for the patient to return home while continuing
to receive intensive
rehabilitation. The program is unique in that it provides a
transitional phase from the hospital to community and home re-entry.
Under the coordination of a rehabilitation nurse, patients
receive outpatient procedures and services such as psychology,
social work, and occupational, physical, recreational, and
speech therapies with respect to the patient's long-term needs.
