The Rehabilitation Institute at Memorial University Medical Center has a comprehensive program to
evaluate and treat people who experience vertigo and balance problems
due to vestibular (ear) disorders. The vestibular system has an
amazing ability to repair and adapt to dysfunction or loss, and
therapy can help speed up this process. Studies show faster recovery
and better outcomes when patients with balance and dizziness disorders
receive early therapeutic intervention with a customized treatment
approach. The Rehabilitation Institute offers highly effective computerized
balance testing and training equipment.
We provide treatment for patients with the following conditions:
- Unilateral vestibular dysfunction or loss
- Bilateral vestibular loss
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV. This is the
most common cause of vertigo. In recent years more than 90
percent of our patients with BPPV were cured in one visit using a single canalith
repositioning maneuver. The canalith repositioning maneuver is
a process of
rotating the patient until the free floating densities that
cause the vertigo are worked out of the ear.
Therapists in the vestibular rehabilitation program customize
treatment programs to decrease dizziness, improve balance, improve visual-vestibular
interaction, and increase activity levels.
