The Sleep Disorders Center at Memorial University Medical Center may help people with the following conditions:
- Sleep apnea (breathing stops for long periods of time during sleep)
- Insomnia (inability to sleep)
- Restless legs syndrome (involuntary kicking that disrupts sleep)
- Narcolepsy (suddenly falling asleep)
Patients spend the night in our sleep lab. Their sleep habits and vital statistics are observed and monitored.
A physician reviews all of the information and recommends a course of treatment.
Some people are asked to spend a second night in the lab after the intervention, to ensure that the treatment worked.
Our Sleep Disorders Center is led by a group of physicians who are board certified in neurology, sleep medicine, or pulmonology.
Our facility has been accredited by the American Association of Sleep Medicine since 1988.

Polysomnography Testing
Sleep testing or “polysomnography” involves monitoring various aspects of the body during sleep to help determine problems.
Brain waves, eye movements, and chin muscles are monitored to determine different levels of sleep.
The heart is monitored for irregular beats. Breathing is monitored for possible respiratory problems.
Leg activity is monitored for abnormal arousals and movements during sleep.
All of this testing occurs in our accredited Sleep Disorders Center.
Patients spend the night at the center and are watched through the night via video and audio monitors and neurophysiological equipment.
All of this testing is done to diagnose a sleep disorder.
Left untreated, sleep disorders can damage quality of life or lead to serious medical problems.
