StepOne is the comprehensive joint replacement program at Memorial University Medical Center. We
specialize in the care of knees, hips, shoulders, and ankles. Total joint
replacement is the process of surgically replacing a damaged joint with an
artificial joint (prosthesis) made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. Joint
replacement can eliminate pain, restore range of motion, improve the appearance
of deformed joints, and make it possible to resume everyday activities and
hobbies.
At StepOne, we guide you through the entire joint replacement process,
from pre-surgical testing through home
therapy or outpatient
therapy. Our goal is to provide you and your family with a
world-class experience. We want to exceed your expectations in care,
treatment, and outcomes.
Is Joint Replacement for Me?
You may be a candidate for joint replacement if you suffer from
osteoarthritis. This condition, also known as degenerative joint
disease, affects about 30 million Americans. Osteoarthritis occurs
when the cartilage that covers the end of a bone gradually wears
away, leading to pain and stiffness. It usually affects weight-bearing
joints such as knees, hips, and ankles. Joint replacement may be
an option when osteoarthritis limits everyday activities such as
walking and bending.
Let Us Teach You
At StepOne, we believe in empowering our patients with education. We've found
that when you fully understand your medical condition and the joint replacement
process, you are better able to participate in your own recovery. That's why
our patients attend an hour-long class before having knee or hip replacement
surgery. The classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11
a.m. Family members and friends who will be helping you after surgery are also
encouraged to attend.
Our Team
The StepOne team includes dedicated orthopedic surgeons, specially
trained nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists,
dietitians, case managers, and social workers. The StepOne continuing
care coordinator helps you move through the entire process and facilitates
outreach programs to educate the community about osteoarthritis
and joint replacement. Every member of our team wants to help you
get back on your feet and return to a healthy, active lifestyle.
Community Events
People who have undergone total joint replacement at Memorial University Medical Center
are invited to attend our quarterly "Stepping Back to the Good Life"
reunion celebrations. People who've had knee or hip replacement
surgery get to know one another and share their experiences. The
reunions are also open to anybody considering total joint replacement
surgery. We also hold free community lectures at various times throughout
the year. To find out when the next lecture will be held, call 350-3603.
