Backus Children’s Hospital to Host Teddy Bear Hospital

(March 12, 2009) - The George and Marie Backus Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) will host a Teddy Bear Hospital on Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hoskins Center on the MUMC campus (Ranger Road at 66th Street). This event is sponsored by a generous grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation. Children age 10 and under are encouraged to bring their favorite teddy bear, stuffed animal, or doll through the mock hospital to learn some of the ways that hospitals help children feel better. This fun environment allows doctors, nurses, and technicians to perform various procedures on the toys, including X-rays, lab tests, and surgery. At the same time, children get a better understanding of how hospitals work and learn about wellness and injury prevention. Participants can meet representatives from Backus Children's Hospital, SafeKids of Savannah, Coastal Therapy Dogs, Chatham County Sheriff's K-9 Unit, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, Savannah Fire and Emergency Services, LittleOne child care, Children's Miracle Network, Wellcare, Savannah Community Blood Bank, Reach Out & Read, and more. Memorial University Medical Center is a two-state healthcare organization serving a 35-county area in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. The system includes its flagship hospital, a 530-bed academic medical center; Memorial primary and specialty care physician networks; a major medical education program; business and industry services; and NurseOne, a 24-hour call center.
