16th Annual Bear Gala 'Bears Salute' to be Celebrated November 4

(October 31, 2011) - The One Hundred's 16th Annual Bear Gala fundraiser to benefit The Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center will be held Friday, November 4, at the Plantation Club at the Landings on SkidawayIsland. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. The theme for the 2011 gala is "Bears Salute," with teddy bears donated by Belk dressed in uniforms representing the five branches of the U.S. military.

The One Hundred is a group of energetic, inspiring volunteers with a common mission: to promote the health of children in our region through advocacy, education, and financial support of The Children's Hospital. This mission is continually advanced by the members' gifts of time, talent, and energy to the hospital. Since its inception in 1994, The One Hundred has raised more than $2.5 million for equipment, special projects, and services for The Children's Hospital.

The 2011 Bear Gala will honor Phillip Hosey, a child whose life was saved by the care he received at The Children's Hospital. In 2007, Hosey's parents brought him to The Children's Hospital because he was having severe seizures. Doctors concluded that the seizures were caused by an abnormality in his brain's blood vessels. Will Thompson, M.D., and Jay Howington, M.D., performed intricate brain surgery to remove the defective vessels and save the child's life. Today, Hosey is a healthy teenager.

Tickets for the Bear Gala are $150 each. To purchase tickets, please contact Kelly Claxton of the Memorial Health Foundation at 912-350-6374.
