Memorial Health Recognized for Endoscopy Quality and Safety

(April 9, 2015) –The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), a leading gastrointestinal medical society, recognized Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) as part of its program dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy settings throughout the United States. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that have demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and quality in endoscopy. To earn the recognition, MUMC had to meet the program’s rigorous criteria, which examined quality, infection control, and the skill of the staff, among other things.

“We are honored to be recognized by ASGE for our efforts to enhance quality and safety in our endoscopy unit,” said Steven Carpenter, M.D., medical director for Memorial’s Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Unit and Center of Excellence. “Our endoscopy unit provides a range of important gastrointestinal procedures, including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, and biliary procedures. These are valuable medical procedures which impact many people in our community, and we’re proud to offer safe, effective services.”

“Pursuing this accreditation for the gastrointestinal diagnostic unit was a goal for our gastrointestinal center of excellence. We are proud of the clinical team for their commitment to excellence,” said Karen Boyer, Memorial’s vice president for patient care services.

ASGE is the profession’s leader in setting standards of excellence in endoscopy through its safety guidelines and the training of its members so that patients receive the best and safest care. The society continually reinforces the importance of quality among its members through member communications and training courses.
