    Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) offers nursing school clinical rotations and internships for visiting medical students and allied health students. Interested college students should first contact the program coordinator or preceptor at their school for details.

     Types of Educational Opportunities

    Memorial University Medical Center proudly offers:

    Applied learning/clinical rotations are part of a student's educational experience. Applied learning and clinical rotations involve working with patients and families in our patient care areas. To participate in this type of learning experience, you must be enrolled in a school program and meet all of the criteria listed below under "Requirements for Students." If you have additional questions after reviewing all of the information below, email student@memorialhealth.com

    Non-paid student internships are only offered in certain areas at Memorial Health. An intern receives no pay or benefits, but does receive educational experience. You must be a student at a school and submit a list of learning objectives from the school. To inquire about an internship, call 912-350-8000 and ask to be transferred to the department where you wish to intern. The department's Team Leaders will complete an eligibility checklist and submit it to human resources to have the internship approved. 

    Paid internships are only offered in certain areas at Memorial Health. An intern agrees to a temporary position, is paid hourly, and receives no medical benefits. The maximum length of a paid internship is 90 days. You do not need to be affiliated with a school to apply. To inquire about an internship, call 912-350-8000 and ask to be transferred to the department where you wish to intern. The department’s Team Leader will complete an eligibility checklist and submit it to human resources to have the internship approved. 

    Job shadowing is an observation-only learning opportunity that lasts for a maximum of seven days. Call 912-350-8000 and ask to be transferred to the department where you wish to job shadow. You will also need to complete this form.

     Requirements for Colleges/Universities

    Content:

    There must be a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) and your institution for all official partnerships. The MOU guides both parties to assure high-quality applied learning experiences for students. Please allow four to six weeks to complete the MOU process.

    • Contact MUMC’s student affiliations coordinator to ensure an MOU is on file with Memorial or to request one. We will check your institution’s accreditation and then draft and MOU for you.
    • Most MOUs will cover “various disciplines.” It is your responsibility to specify each discipline and provide each contact’s name, phone number, and email. 
    • It is your institution’s responsibility to have the MOU reviewed by your legal department and signed. The signed MOU must be returned to our student affiliations coordinator along with proof of your professional liability insurance.
    • The MOU will then be reviewed by our legal team and signed. Both parties will receive a signed copy of the MOU for their records. 

    College/University Responsibilities

    • Keep student immunization records on file. 
    • Ensure students get a flu vaccine (required October 1 through March 31)
    • Ensure students receive and review the online training materials. Students should go to the Memorial Health NetLearning page and log in using ID number 909081116. The training modules to review are located on the right side of the page under the heading "myCompletions." 
    • Ensure nursing students complete and submit the third-party user agreement to access protected health information.
    • Ensure students complete the following forms and have them available to be accessed within 24 hours, if requested: 
    • Submit completed MOU Attachment G: Verification of Student Information to student@memorialhealth.com.
    • Ensure students complete a background check within six months of their start date and a drug screen within 45 days of their start date. This must be conducted through PSI.
    • Verify students are cleared to pick up their badge and begin rotation via student@memorialhealth.com.

    • Before you begin an educational rotation at Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC), contact your school’s student coordinator to make sure your institution has a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with us.
    • It is your or your school’s responsibility to find a preceptor for your rotation.
    • Your school will ask you to complete the required paperwork and will send a student verification form to MUMC.
    • You must complete a background check within six months of your start date and a 10-panel drug screen within 45 days of your start date. This must be conducted through PSI
    • After you have reviewed the training materials (login number is 909081116)*, completed all forms, submitted all forms to your student coordinator, completed the background check and drug screen, and PSI has submitted the results to Memorial Health, your school’s student coordinator will receive information to help you obtain your student badge and begin your rotation.

       Background Check and Drug Screen

      Memorial Health contracts with Professional Screening & Information, Inc. (PSI), to provide background checks and a drug screen at a reduced rate of $76. The student is responsible for the cost of this service. 

      The background check must be completed within six months of your Memorial Health rotation. The 10-panel drug screen must be completed within 45 days of starting your rotation. 

      All students completing an applied learning experience at Memorial Health are subject to random drug testing.

      Q: Can I complete a rotation if my school does not have a memorandum of understanding with Memorial?
      A: No. Each school must have a memorandum of understanding with Memorial Health before any student can complete an educational experience on our campus.

      Q: How can I find out if my school has a memorandum of understanding with Memorial?
      A: Contact your school’s student coordinator. If he or she is unsure, the coordinator can contact Memorial at student@memorialhealth.com.

      Q: Will Memorial arrange a preceptor for me?
      A: No. It is the responsibility of the student to secure a preceptor. Please call Memorial’s main number 912-350-8000 and request to be transferred to the department of interest.

      Q: Do my background check and drug screen have to be completed through PSI? Who is responsible for the fee?
      A: Yes. Memorial Health requires all students to have a background check and drug screen completed through PSI. We will not accept results from any other company. The student is responsible for the fee. 

      Q: What if I have an adverse background check or a positive drug screen?
      A: Offenses on your background check will be reviewed and your acceptance will be under review. Before your test, notify PSI of all prescription medications you are taking. If you have a positive drug screen and not able to show that you have a prescription for the medication, you will be disqualified from completing an educational experience at Memorial Health.

      Q: Can I submit my verification form and all other required forms to Memorial?
      A: No. The verification must be submitted by the school. We cannot accept verification forms from students.

      Q: What if I have to decline the flu shot due to a medical contraindication or religious objection?
      A: If you must decline a flu vaccine due to a medical contraindication or religious objection, you will be required to wear a mask when within six feet of patients. You must also complete a formal declination form in Memorial’s Employee Health unit. You will be given a blue badge sticker indicating that you must wear a mask.

      Q: What if I need help accessing NetLearning to complete my training?
      A: Use our NetLearning instruction guide to make sure there are no compatibility issues with your computer. NetLearning should be accessed from a PC rather than a Mac.  

      Q: I am a Team Member at Memorial and a student. Can I complete a rotation and do I need to complete the background and drug screen again?
      A: You may participate in a rotation as long as your school has a memorandum of understanding on file with Memorial. You do not need to complete a second background check and drug screen. 

      Q: How will I know when I am approved to start my educational experience?
      A: Contact the student coordinator at your school for status updates. If the coordinator is unsure, he or she may contact the student affiliations coordinator at Memorial at student@memorialhealth.com.

      Q: Can I job shadow in the emergency room, the neonatal intensive care nursery, or other sensitive areas of the hospital?
      A: No there are no job shadow opportunities available in these departments. 

      Q: How can I obtain my badge and parking decal?
      A: The coordinator at your school will provide this information for you. 

      Q: Does Memorial Health have nurse residencies or other career opportunities?
