Emergency care

Emergency care is the treatment of unexpected, severe medical injuries or infections. It is typically delivered in an emergency room or an ambulance. Our emergency medicine physicians stabilize your condition as quickly as possible to prepare you for the next step of care or discharge.

About our emergency department

Our goal is to provide seamless support for you and your family. To do this, our emergency department offers a variety of services that allow for continuous care throughout treatment and recovery.

Dedicated stroke center

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain has been interrupted, requiring emergency care to prevent permanent damage.

Our board-certified emergency medicine physicians work alongside our on-site neurologists to provide potentially life-saving care, identifying and treating strokes as soon as possible.

Emergency care for children

At our children's hospital ER, our care team includes pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric nurses and respiratory therapists who are trained to deliver immediate care to children.

Level I Trauma Center

As the only Level I Trauma Center in Southeast Georgia verified by the American College of Surgeons, we have demonstrated our commitment to growing our resources and expertise so we can effectively treat injuries, minimize long-term damage and, hopefully, save lives.

Neonatal intensive care

Knowing your infant needs extra care at birth can be difficult, but it is important to know that there are helping hands available. Our children's hospital includes the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), as verified by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Here, our expert neonatologists operate under one principle — help your baby get the best possible start to life.

Our emergency care providers

Our emergency department includes a multispecialty team of doctors, surgeons and nurses who are committed to providing high-quality care when you need it most.

We collaborate with local emergency medical services (EMS) providers to continuously improve our heart attack transport and door-to-balloon times, as well as our stroke door-to-treatment times.

ER vs. urgent care

Deciding between emergency or urgent care isn’t always easy, especially in the moment. We help you differentiate between the two, so you know where to go when you need swift medical treatment.

Conditions treated in the ER

Go to the closest ER as soon as possible if you experience any of the following:

  • Asthma attacks
  • Behavioral health issues
  • Broken bones
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Concussion
  • Head trauma
  • Heart attack
  • Open wounds
  • Seizures
  • Serious chest pain
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Strokes
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Trouble breathing

Conditions treated in urgent care

Our urgent care centers provide treatment for commonplace sicknesses and injuries, such as flu symptoms and ankle sprains. However, unlike our ER facilities, our walk-in clinics aren't open 24/7 and are unable to treat more serious conditions.

Through urgent care, we treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Common colds
  • Ear infection
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Head lice
  • Minor cuts and falls
  • Mononucleosis (mono)
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Strep throat
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

If you are unsure whether a symptom requires emergency or urgent care, our Consult-a-Nurse® line is available 24/7 at (912) 350-9355. Consult-A-Nurse is a free service from our HCA Hospitals designed to provide you with health information and physician referrals. Our nurses staff our free hotline to help you determine the right type of care for your injury or illness before you leave home.
