Diagnostic procedures for GI issues

Our highly-trained healthcare professionals, including nurses, endoscopy technicians and anesthesiologists, provide both inpatient and outpatient services in our on-site gastrointestinal diagnostic unit (GIDU). Here, we provide presurgical testing and preparation for GI procedures, as well as postoperative care. Depending on the type and severity of your condition, you may be referred to the GIDU for diagnostic procedures, such as:

  • Bronchoscopy — Examines the lungs and air passages via inserting a thin tube down the throat and into the lung
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) — Diagnoses problems occurring in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and pancreatic duct
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) — Allows your doctor to examine the linings of the esophagus and stomach, as well as the walls of your upper and lower GI tract
  • Esophageal manometry — Measures the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and esophageal muscles to determine how food is moving into the stomach
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) — Examines the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the small intestine to diagnose acid reflux and ulcers
  • Liver biopsy — Removes a sample of tissue from the liver for testing
  • Paracentesis — Acquires a sample of fluids from the abdominal cavity
  • pH studies — Measure acidity levels in the stomach and esophagus to determine medication efficacy or the presence of chronic acid reflux
  • Sigmoidoscopy — Inserts a thin tube in the lower portion of the colon to diagnose intestinal problems or abnormal growths

Colorectal cancer care

Colon cancer is diagnosed when a growth of abnormal cells is identified in the large intestine. The colon is responsible for absorbing water and nutrients from the foods we eat. After passing through the colon, solid waste is passed into the rectum for storage, prior to being expelled from the body. Colorectal cancer may also be found throughout the large intestine, including the colon and rectum.

Our specialists use different types of diagnostic tests to identify if colorectal cancer is present, which include:

  • Colonoscopy — Creates visibility inside your colon to help identify bleeding or early signs of colorectal cancer
  • Computerized tomography (CT) colonography — Specialized imaging exam to view the interior of the colon
  • Stool testing — Process to identify if hidden blood is present

If colorectal cancer is found during diagnostic testing, our full-service cancer center is available with treatment options, including:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery, including colectomy and polypectomy

GI disease treatments

Following diagnostic testing, your doctor will implement a treatment planned based on their findings. You may be prescribed medication to manage your GI disease, or you may need to schedule a procedure such as:

  • Endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) — Dilates or stretches a narrowed portion of the esophagus to treat Barrett's esophagus
  • Dilation of the colon — Widens any narrowing that has occurred in the small intestine or colon
  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) — Places a feeding tube into your stomach through your skin

Minimally invasive GERD treatment

GERD occurs when you experience chronic acid reflux, which is defined by recurring heartburn. Symptoms are caused by a backflow of stomach fluid into the lower esophagus, and while some individuals are able to manage their GERD symptoms through medications or lifestyle changes, others may require surgery.

Our specialists treat GERD using transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF). This is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed without any surgical incisions. As a result, you may experience less discomfort, minimal scarring and a faster recovery time, compared to traditional surgery.

The TIF procedure is used to rebuild your body's esophageal valve to keep acid in the stomach and prevent reflux.

We are recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy for our commitment to quality care and safety during gastrointestinal procedures. To learn more about gastrointestinal treatments we offer or schedule an appointment, please call (912) 350-6113.
