Conditions that can affect pregnancy
A high-risk pregnancy could be caused by a preexisting condition or an illness or injury. Some factors that can cause your pregnancy to be considered high risk include:
- Advanced maternal age
- Chronic illnesses
- Excessive body mass index (BMI)
- Multiple babies in your womb
- Previous pregnancy complications
Services our perinatologists offer
The maternal-fetal medicine specialists, or perinatologists, at our family birth center have extensive training in diagnosing and treating genetic anomalies, multiple pregnancies and serious health conditions for both mother and baby.
Factors that can lead to a complicated pregnancy
A high-risk pregnancy occurs when the mother or the baby has an increased risk of adverse outcomes during pregnancy or labor and delivery. While there are many risk factors that can contribute to a pregnancy being considered high-risk, the most prevalent is having a baby after the age of 35. Known as "advanced maternal age," having children later in life can present a higher possibility of your baby experiencing a chromosomal abnormality, including Down’s syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome and Turner syndrome. Advanced maternal age can also lead to you developing gestational diabetes or hypertension.
If you think your pregnancy may be high risk, talk with your obstetrician about your questions and concerns. It is necessary to schedule regular check-ups with your obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) throughout your pregnancy. In doing so, any potential risk factors can quickly be addressed and monitored.
